In Her Defence is an eight-part narrative podcast series about Alberta, Canada farmer Helen Naslund, who killed her abusive husband in 2011. She was sentenced to 18 years in prison.
The podcast tells Helen’s story in her own words for the first time, examining her treatment within the justice system, and following efforts to have her sentence reduced.
In Her Defence was co-created by Jana Pruden and Kasia Mychajlowycz, and was the Globe and Mail’s first narrative podcast. It has received significant critical acclaim, and reached #1 on Apple’s podcast charts in both true crime and general categories, and was named one of Amazon’s top podcasts of 2023.
Bingeworthy’s Samantha Hodder named In Her Defence one of her top picks for 2023, and described In Her Defence as “more than true crime… true dialogue.” She interviews Jana and gives her analysis of the series here.
You can also listen to an interview with Jana about In Her Defence on CBC’s Crime Story podcast, hosted by Kathleen Goldhar. A video of that interview is here.
In Her Defence is available on Apple podcasts, Spotify, Pocket Casts, Google Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.
